All About Bird Feeder Supplies And Feeding Birds

Posted by Filed Under Featured with No Comments

The choices of bird feeder supplies and for the bird feeders themsleves are huge – but getting to the answer is a relatively simple process.

The first question you must ask is what type of bird(s) you want to feed and where you are going to feed them.  Different bird species will eat different types of seeds so answering this is crucial.  Then, you decide where you will feed the birds and if there is competition from squirrels and other animals – this will give you the answer to the type of bird feeder you need.

In this article we discuss the types of bird feed supplies you can use.

Black-Oil SunflowerIf we were to pick just one type of feed, this would be our choice as this black-oil sunflower is perfect for a whole range of species including both jays and cardinals.

You can get this without the shells which is a big time-saver and your birds will just love this high-protein feed.

Thistle and Nyjer

This is the feed of choise for the finch family.  Finches have the ability to feed upside-down so you would use a feeding port that has it’s perch above the feeding perch so the finches can hold the perch, turn upside-down and feed.

It is recommended that you do not buy too much thistle and nyjer feed as it has a realtively short life (less than six months) – so buy small quantities as you need to replenish your feeder.  And do not forget to clean your feed – at least once a month at a minimum.

Mixed Seed

If you want to feed a wide variety of bords then mixed seed is probably the way to go.

There are severl differnt mixes but we recommend you start with a black-oil sunflower and cracked corn mix to start.  See what types of bird this attracts and then change to a different mix if you are not attracting the types of birds you want.

Nectar

There are two types of nectar – Hummingbird and Oriole.

Both are made from sucrose (100%) and do not contain any artificial sweetners – and therefore they are a perfect, energy giving feed.

They come in three forms: powder, to be mixed with water, concentrate and ready to use.  All three work just fine.

Siskins

Posted by Filed Under Bird Feeder Supplies with 1 Comment

Siskins are small, delicately marked finches which form flocks in winter. Flocks of up to 40 have been in Roslin Glen in the past few weeks.

Three female siskins and one male visited my garden this morning. The females came to my feeders. They are attracted by nyjer seed and thistle seed.

I bought a metal feeder because squirrels had destroyed my last two plastic ones!

The feeder had been up for over a month before the birds discovered it. Once they find a food source the news spreads!

bird seed bug problem! help?!?

Posted by Filed Under Bird Feeder Supplies with 3 Comments

So I opened a container of my bird’s pellets (it’s Zupreem FruitBlend if anyone has had this problem before) and lo behold a moth flies out. I look back at the larger container a transferred the pellets from and it has several moths in it. So at first i thought the bag came with eggs in it. But then i checked the other two large containers of the same pellets (all three of the large containers came from the SAME giant bulk bag of pellets, and i refill the small container that sits under the bird’s cage from one of these large containers at a time.) and i found that the other two containers had no bugs. If the entire package had bugs, shouldn’t the 2nd and 3rd containers also have bugs? So then how did the bug eggs get into the first container??? I’m going to start freezing the bags anyway, but even so if only one container had bugs than how is it from the bag and how can i prevent this?

Also all of my containers are air tight Lock & Locks and are kept closed at all times unless i’m transferring food or filling her bowl.

Any thoughts are much appreciated! :]

How To Make Homemade Bird Treats

Posted by Filed Under Bird Feeder Supplies with 25 Comments

Here’s an easy recipe for homemade bird treats. 2 cups of crushed Cheerios 2 cups of seed mixture (or pellets) 1 cup of honey Mix the ingredients together until you have a thick consistency. Press the mixture onto a baking pan and put it in the oven at 250 degrees for an hour. Let it cool. The consistency should be stiff enough to roll into balls. After shaping, put them back in the oven at 200 degrees for 30 minutes to 1 hour to harden the treats. Music: “City of Angels” and “The Unfeeling Kiss” by Gabriel Yared

Is there any reason I couldn’t feed my caged finches, keets, and canaries a wild bird seed mixture?

I was looking at a bag I just bought and it looks just like what I feed my indoor birds. It has everything in it that the mix I pay huge postage for to have shipped here.

I wouldn’t do anything to endanger my fids but I’d love to save some money if I could! I have about 40 assorted little birds.

Answer Quick Please!!!!!!!!!?

At Bob’s Best Buys you can scoop your own mixture of birdseed and weigh it. He sells it by the
pound. Bob also sells packaged birdseed with the weight marked on the bag. Some customers
prefer to make their own mixture; others buy the packaged sizes. Some customers buy large bags
because they have large yards with many bird feeders. Other people prefer to buy small bags for a
pet. At the checkout, Bob weighs the bag and charges by the pound. The problem is that most
customers want to know the price before they get to the checkout. Bob would like to post a chart that
would tell people the price once they know the weight.
Bob sells five pounds for .00 and he charges the same rate no matter how much you buy- there are
no discounts for larger quantities. Bob sells bags packaged at the following weights: ¼, ¾, 1, 2, 3, 5,
8, 13, 21, 34 and 90 pounds. Customers also need to know the price for either weight that they
scoop themselves. Make a chart that Bob can use in his store.
OMG i am begging you please answer my question!!!!
